Welcome and Introduction

I have been told from time to time that I should be a professional movie critic. Every time I've been told this, I am flattered, but also can't help but think that the person who issued this compliment must have either A) an incredibly low opinion of the "movie-criticing" profession, or B) over-inflated perceptions of my own abilities as a writer or observer.

I really enjoy movies. In fact, I love'em. I love watching them, I love talking about them, I love reading and learning about them, and I love ....um, watching them again (some of them, anyway). But that alone doesn't really distinguish me from anyone else that loves movies.

So what does make my opinion interesting? Probably nothing. But enough people have told me to give this a go that I finally decided to try it. This blog's credo is very simple. Don't listen to me. See for yourself. Don't ever let someone else's opinion of a movie (or any other artform, for that matter) be the sole source of information that shapes YOUR opinion. You wanna know if a movie's any good? See for yourself.

I'm certainly no industry insider or movie professional on any level at all, but I did take some film appreciation classes in college that imbued in me the ability to see value - to see art - in movies where such notions previously were not evident. My basic rule when it comes to assessing a movie's worth is whether it engaged me enough to warrant a second viewing. I believe that on some level, virtually any film is worth seeing at least once. Sure, there will be times when the credits roll that I'll feel like I wasted my time, but that makes the great movies that much greater.

So if you feel so inclined, check me out from time to time. I am hoping to have a running "movie of the week" feature, and I'm tentatively planning a big "top ten movies of the 00's" post toward the end of 2009. I'd like to also feature films that are family-friendly (read: PG-13 rating or lower). I don't fancy myself any kind of film snob, and I'm the first to admit there's a whole world of film outside the U.S. that I have only scraped the tip of the iceberg on. I'm just a regular guy who likes movies, and knows a great one when I see it.
